Automobile Drivers
Always Look Twice for Motorcycles!
|
Motorcycles are much
smaller than cars or trucks. This fact, along with the possibility
of a driver misjudging the speed, maneuverability and stopping
power of a motorcycle, makes it necessary for you to develop
an increased awareness of Motorcycles. Always take an extra
moment or two, to look for motorcyclists who might be traveling
the section of road that you are about to enter into.
Please drive safely,
respectfully, and within the limit of your abilities at
all times & NEVER drive while under the influence of
alcohol or drugs.

Motorcycle Riders
While Riding, Think Safety at All Times!
|
Sign up for, and attend, a Motorcycle
Rider Training Course suitable to your skill level.
While riding your motorcycle ride safely, respectfully,
and always stay within the limit of your abilities. The
thrill is not worth the pain. You and your passenger should
always wear the appropriate, protective clothing for your
riding environment. Never ride while under the influence
of alcohol or drugs. Know your bike inside and out. Take
the time to read and understand your motorcycle owner's
manual. Always be aware of your surroundings and look for
unexpected road obstacles including cars, trucks, people,
animals, pot holes, sand, fluid spills, trash, trees, etc.
Be prepared to use the avoidance maneuvers you learned in
your Motorcycle
Rider Training Course.

"Inattentional
Blindness"
(Perhaps, the most obvious hazard
all motorcyclists face)
|
Surprising as it
may seem, research shows that we rarely see what we are
looking at unless our attention is directed to it. This
phenomenon can have serious life-and-death consequences.
Although the inextricable link between perceiving and attending
was noted long ago by Aristotle, this phenomenon, now called
inattentional blindness (IB), only recently has been named
and carefully studied. Among the many questions that have
been raised about IB are questions about the fate of the
clearly visible, yet unseen stimuli, whether any stimuli
reliably capture attention, and, if so, what they have in
common. Finally, is IB an instance of rapid forgetting,
or is it a failure to perceive?

Founded in 1924, the AMA
has an unparalleled history of pursuing, protecting and promoting
the interests of the world's largest and most dedicated group
of motorcycle enthusiasts. The AMA
focuses on rights, riding and racing through its government relations
work, by sanctioning road and off-road riding activities and overseeing
professional and amateur racing events.
In addition, the AMA
is the sole American affiliate of the Fédération
Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM),
the international governing body for motorcycle sport and touring
activity.
The AMA’s
headquarters in Pickerington, Ohio, is also home to the Motorcycle
Hall of Fame Museum. The Hall of Fame honors those who have
contributed notably to our sport and the Museum's three galleries
present rotating exhibits of interest to motorcyclists and the
general public.
If it's motorcycling, the
AMA is very likely involved in it.
